Lower Gorges of the Salmon River, Idaho
Multi Day Trips

Outdoor Vacation in the Lower Salmon Gorge

The Lower Salmon or Lower Gorge of the Salmon is another one of Idaho's great river trips. The Lower Salmon is the last 52 miles of the Salmon before it's confluence with the Snake River. The Lower is a great first time trip or an excellent trip for those who have already done the upper sections of the river and would like to see the unique character of the Lower Gorge. This section unlike other parts of the Salmon River is a desert river. The Lower Salmon flows through the basalt desert of the Columbia Plateau, an area with many bizarre and beautiful rock formations famous for millions of year's worth of volcanic floods. The Lower Salmon flows through four distinct, sheer walled gorges. Within these four gorges we encounter most of the rapids. We float through class II-III rapids with names like Rollercoaster, Demons Drop, Bodacious Bounce and Eye of the Needle to name a few. Snow Hole and China Bar rapids are rated as class IV but we make them look pretty easy as our rafts slide between the rocks. Between the rapids, we pause and examine pit houses, pictographs, and rock shelters left behind by the ancestors of the Nez Perce Tribe. The history of the Lower Salmon is also rich with stories of mining, ranching and homesteading in the late 1800's. The Lower Gorge boasts the best camping on the length of the Salmon River; the beaches seem almost tropical in their size and the quality of the sand.

Lower Salmon Trip Details
We offer overnight Salmon River raft trips near Riggins Idaho as well as 3-6 day trips on the Main and Lower Salmon. Our Lower Salmon trips begin with an orientation the night before your trip at our office in Riggins. We offer the Lower as either a 3, 4 or 5 day trip. Our 3 day is a great quick getaway. You will spend 2 full days and 2 nights on the Salmon. Our 4 day trip offers a more relaxed pace, more river miles & more rapids. The 4 day gives us a better opportunity to fish or explore more of the history along the way. The 5 day allows more time for fishing, hiking or just relaxing. Half of the last day on all of regular raft trips is spent on the Snake River in Hells Canyon.

Our Lower Gorge trips include:
ground shuttles to and from the river launch and take-out; rich and hearty meals beginning with lunch on the first day and ending with lunch on the last day; beverages including bottled water, lemonade, Gatorade, soda, juice and some beer and wine in camp; all camping and rafting equipment including roomy 3 person tents for every 2 people, freshly laundered sleeping bags, pillows and sheets, super cushy Paco sleeping pads, wetsuits and splash-gear for early summer trips, and self bailing rafts and inflatable kayaks. We can combine 1 to 4 nights of lodging and camping with optional activities like: horseback riding, hiking, jet boat tour or a day of complete relaxation before heading back out to civilization. We also carry a library with books and interesting articles about the Salmon River which you can peruse in camp. Our Lower Salmon river trip can be combined with a 1 to 3 nights of lodging and camping with optional activities like: horseback riding, Hells Canyon jet boat tour, or sturgeon, trout and small mouth bass fishing for the perfect Idaho vacation. If you want to unplug, unwind and experience the ultimate in relaxation, a river trip is the perfect way to do absolutely nothing. If you are looking for a more active adventure, you can choose to paddle in one of our paddle boats or an inflatable kayak. At the end of the day if you still have energy, you can play beach volleyball, horseshoes, freestyle beach bocce ball, fish, or go for a hike while our guides set up camp and make dinner.

Our takeout is near Asotin Washington and is a 3 hour van ride back to Riggins. We will gladly arrange to have your vehicle shuttled to the take-out for an additional fee. Any of our trips can also be combined with a thrilling jet boat ride back up the Snake River from its confluence with the Salmon River to an alternate take-out at Pittsburg landing. This 1 hour jet boat ride eliminates all but the last 45 minutes of the land shuttle back to our office in Riggins. We run the jet back portion of the trip with another outfitter so call us for availability and pricing.

Food on the River
Meals are a big part of our river trips; we carry a complete outdoor kitchen including everything we need to cook and everything you need to enjoy our unique menu. Our meals consist of a wide variety of flavors and dishes including grilled steak, BBQ chicken, and lime cilantro halibut to sizzling fajitas and our famous Dutch-oven lasagna. Each dinner is served with a delicious appetizer, fresh salad, cooked veggies or other side dish, as well as warm breads and Dutch-oven desserts. Breakfasts range from light and simple to hearty and complex so you never get hungry before lunch. Our lunches include a deli style sandwich bar, fresh curry style chicken salad, our famous chopped Italian salad, and smoked salmon on bagels. We provide a moderate amount of beer and wine with meals and in camp. We also provide cold beverages and plenty of cold water and drink mixes throughout the trip as well as a variety of snacks readily available throughout the day. We are more than happy to customize our menu to suit your appetite, your health concerns, a special occasion, or a child's picky appetite and specialize in vegetarian alternatives.

Ages, Abilities and Group Size
Our Lower Salmon trip is well suited to any age and all abilities. We can host participants who are in reasonably good shape from 6 years old and up. Our river trips allow you to participate in any way that you choose. Our rafts can be set up for paddle teams who want to share in the excitement or as oar boats for those who would rather sit quietly and enjoy the scenery. Our oar boats are also great for younger children or apprehensive rafters. We also have inflatable kayaks for 1 or 2 paddlers. If you are a hard shell kayaker you can bring your own kayak or rent one locally; we can help find rental kayaks prior to your arrival in Idaho. Hard shell kayakers should provide there own paddle, dry top/dry suit or splash gear, helmet and a Coast Guard approved PFD. Kayakers should also have a good river roll and prior class 3 whitewater experience.

We are required by the Bureau of Land Management to keep our trip size at no more than 24 guests plus guides with our average trip size around 12 plus guides. We are always willing to charter an open launch date for a group with a minimum of 10 passengers. See our launch dates and trip pricing table at the bottom of this page for details on our trips, specialty trips and pricing for each of our trips.
