Salmon River Fishing TripsSteelhead and Salmon Fishing in Idaho
For the ultimate freshwater fishing experience, join us in the fall or spring for steelhead fishing season on the Salmon River. These migratory fish are hatched in Idaho, make their way to the Pacific Ocean and return to Idaho after spending 1-3 years in the ocean. During the course of our season we see fish in the range of 6-18 lbs. Our early fall trips feature the most ferocious steelhead with vicious takedowns on plugs and flies. Once the water cools toward the end of October we begin to see bigger B run fish. These are the real monsters of the river! From November on through the rest of the season we see lots of fish in the 10-16 lb range.
Our heated and covered jet boats, which are licensed and certified by the United States Coast Guard and comfortably fish 6-7 people, allow us to fish a lot of water in a day and access some remote stretches of the river. We prefer to not take more than 6-7 people on a jet boat so that we ensure plenty of elbow room and that everyone fishes from the boat all day; you will not fish from shore unless you want to. Our jet boats fish the Spring Bar to Vinegar Creek section or the wilderness section from Vinegar Creek to as far upriver as the South Fork of the Salmon. This section of the river lies within the Wild and Scenic section of the Salmon River and can be combined with a lodge overnight stay at Mackay Bar Ranch for the perfect 2 day fishing adventure.
All of our boats are set up with a propane heater system, plenty of dry storage, and a complete set of casting rods and a complete set of plug rods; that eliminates the need to switch tackle between holes. We provide the experience to give fishermen the best possible chance to hook and land several fish per day. On our day trips we provide a deli lunch, snacks and hot and cold beverages. Our drift boat trips include shuttles; we know that you come with us to fish not drive around and look at the river. Our steelhead fishing season runs from September 1 through March 31 each year, with the peak of the fall run in mid October through early December and the peak of the spring run in late January through early March. You can also combine any of our fall fishing trips with upland game bird hunting for Chukar, Hungarian Partridge, and Quail. These trips require you to be in good shape and willing to walk over rough terrain. Our guide will provide pointing dogs or you can bring your own dog with prior arrangements. You must also supply your own shotgun and ammo. Our spring salmon season runs from April through June when the season is allowed by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. We offer fly fishing or spin
fishing steelhead trips by drift boat and jet boat. Our heated drift boats are
the ultimate fishing experience. Enjoy the quiet of the river and the beauty of
the canyon with only 2 fishermen per boat or you can request one of our big 20
foot drift boats that have seats (and plenty of room) for 4 fishermen. Our
drift boats fish the upriver section from Vinegar Creek to Island Bar or Exodus
has 1 of 3 exclusive downriver permits allowing our drift boats to fish an
additional 30 miles of prime steelhead water, particularly for the fly
fishermen. This additional water is from the Riggins City Park to Hammer Creek.
In addition to our daily trips, we offer 2, 4 or 5 day multi day trips that
combine small mouth bass fishing, steelhead fishing and chukar hunting on the
Lower Gorge of the Salmon River. While you fish and hunt your way through the
river canyon, our supply raft goes ahead to set up camp. This is a true Idaho
sportsman's vacation.
