10-day Salmon River
Expedition
 Combine our two most popular trips, the Main and the
Lower Salmon. This is Idaho's ultimate river trip, 10 days on the Salmon River.
Experience the longest free flowing river in the U.S. from top to bottom. We
will float 200 miles of the Salmon from the Confluence of the Middle Fork of
the Salmon to the Confluence of the Snake and Salmon Rivers.
The first half of this trip is on the Main Salmon
"River of No Return". This is a truly inspiring trip through the largest
contiguous wilderness area in the Lower 48 states. The canyon is filled with
beautiful stands of Ponderosa Pine and offers plenty of opportunities to view
wildlife in its natural habitat. The Main offers great rapids, wonderful camps,
hotsprings, and some fascinating historical stops. On day 6 we will spend the
night in Riggins at the Salmon Rapids Lodge where you can luxuriate in the hot
tub, take a real shower, and sleep in a real bed. We will have your extra
luggage at our office in Riggins, so you can also get a change of clothes. On
the morning of our seventh day, we will leave Riggins with plenty of fresh food
and drinks for the second half of our journey.
Near Riggins, the character of the Salmon changes dramatically.
The river bends to the north and cuts its way through the
Columbia River Flood basalts. The layer-cake geology offers
many spectacular vistas. This was the site of the famous Nez
Perce War as well as home to many different groups from ancient
times to the present. We will examine some of the relics left
behind by the nomadic people of early times as well as the
pithouses and mining relics left by Chinese miners before
the turn of the century. The Lower Salmon offers the best
camping anywhere on the length of the river. Large beaches
of beautiful white sand will provide us with lodging for the
night where you can swim, fish, or build the ultimate sandcastle.
The unique character of this part of the Salmon can only be
totally appreciated after having seen the upper river and
sharing in its secrets. On our last day, we will float to
the magical confluence of the Salmon and the Snake. Jet boat
shuttle on Snake River can be added for an extra fee.
